Baby is here now what?  You may be wondering what essentials you will be needing for your postpartum care.  Heres a list of supplies you will need to support your recovery and care for yourself during the postpartum period.  If you are experiencing postpartum pain, from soothing remedies for perineal pain to nursing essentials and baby care items, having a comprehensive list can alleviate stress and make the transition into parenthood smoother. 

Postpartum supply list:

  1. Epsom Salt Sitz Bath: For Postpartum Pain Relief
    • Recipe: Dissolve 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Epsom salt in a shallow tub or basin filled with warm water.
    • Instructions: Stir the Epsom salt until it's completely dissolved, then sit in the solution for 10-15 minutes. Epsom salt helps reduce inflammation, relieve soreness, and promote relaxation in the perineal area.

  1. Herbal Sitz Bath:
    • Recipe: Combine a handful of soothing herbs such as chamomile, calendula, and lavender in a large bowl or muslin bag.
    • Instructions: Steep the herbs in a pot of boiling water for about 15-20 minutes, then strain the liquid and pour it into a warm bath. Soak in the herbal-infused water for 15-20 minutes to soothe perineal discomfort and promote healing.

  1. Witch Hazel Sitz Bath:
    • Recipe: Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of witch hazel to a shallow tub or basin filled with warm water.
    • Instructions: Stir the witch hazel into the water, then sit in the solution for 10-15 minutes. Witch hazel has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the perineal area.

  1. Baking Soda Sitz Bath:
    • Recipe: Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of baking soda to a shallow tub or basin filled with warm water.
    • Instructions: Stir the baking soda into the water until it's completely dissolved, then sit in the solution for 10-15 minutes. Baking soda can help soothe itching, irritation, and inflammation in the perineal area.

Always ensure that the water temperature is comfortably warm and safe before sitting in the sitz bath. You can repeat these sitz baths 2-3 times a day or as needed to alleviate discomfort and promote healing during the postpartum period. If you have any allergies or medical conditions, consult with your healthcare provider before using any home remedies.
